Gluconan, Glucomannan, Konjac or Konjac Root, also known as konjaku, konnyaku potato, devil's tongue, voodoo lily, snake palm, or elephant yam (though this name is also used for A. paeoniifolius), is a plant of the genus Amorphophallus. It is native to warm subtropical to tropical eastern Asia, from Japan and China south to Indonesia. It is a perennial plant, growing from a large corm up to 25 cm in diameter. The single leaf is up to 1.3 m across, bipinnate, and divided into numerous leaflets. The flowers are produced on a spathe enclosed by a dark purple spadix up to 55 cm long. The corm of the konjac is often colloquially referred to as a yam, although it bears no marked relation to tubers of the family Dioscoreaceae.

Description:

  • Glucomannan is a dietary fiber becoming more popular in Western countries. Peoples in East Asia have used this fiber for more than a thousand years. This dietary fiber is the main polysaccharide obtained from the tubers of the Amorphophallus konjac plant. Glucomannan fiber has a extraordinarily high water holding capacity, forming highly viscous solutions when dissolved in water. It has the highest molecular weight and viscosity of any known dietary fiber. This supplement has studied in the treatment of obesity due to the satiety sensation that it produces; as a remedy for constipation, because it increases the feces volume; as a blood cholesterol lowering agent, interfering in the transport of cholesterol and of bile acids and as blood sugar lowering supplement for those with diabetes. The use of a glucomanna supplement delays gastric emptying and slows glucose delivery to the intestinal mucosa.

Glucomannan Uses:

  • Type 2 diabetes: Glucomannan is useful as a therapeutic adjunct for type 2 diabetes. It has been shown to improve the lipid profile and alleviate the fasting blood glucose levels of type 2 diabetics.

  • Cholesterol and other lipids: Glucomannan has demonstrated statistically significant improvements in the total cholesterol of obese patients.

  • Constipation: Glucomannan is a soluble fiber, and as such, has been investigated for the treatment of constipation. Glucomannan may relieve constipation by decreasing fecal transit time. In the treatment of chronic constipation, glucomannan significantly improved symptoms of constipation while being well-tolerated and free of relevant side effects.

  • GI effects: Polysaccharides, such as glucomannan are used as foodstuffs and, more recently, as dietary and therapeutic agents. Their ability to swell by the absorption of water has made them useful as laxatives. Additionally, konjac glucomannan has been investigated for its role as a prebiotic, an agent that stimulates the growth and activity of beneficial gut flora, including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species.

  • Antidiabetic effects: By increasing the viscosity of the intestinal contents and slowing gastric emptying time, glucomannan is able to reduce postprandial glucose levels and attenuate insulin surges. This likely improves peripheral insulin sensitivity.

  • Weight reduction effects: Upon oral administration, glucomannan passes mostly unchanged into the colon as human salivary and pancreatic amylase enzymes are unable to split the beta-1,4 glucosidic linkages. The polysaccharide is believed to cause weight loss by promoting satiety, delaying gastric emptying time, slowing small-bowel transit time, attenuating postprandial insulin surges, and increasing levels of plasma cholecystokinin.

  • Effects on lipids: The activity of konjac mannan cannot be explained by a simple interaction with bile acids because it shows no in vitro or in vivo bile acid–binding activity. Rather, it appears to inhibit the active transport of cholesterol in the jejunum and the absorption of bile acids in the ileum, yielding improvements in plasma LDL and apolipoprotein B levels.

  • Effects on lung cancer: A study from China has investigated the ability of Glucomannan to inhibit lung cancers in mice. 38 Mice fed a diet of 8% konjaku powder, mixed in with a common diet, showed a reduction in cancer rate from 70.87% in the positive control group to 19.38% in the group fed with konjac powder. Lung tumors were induced with N-methyl- N′-nitro- N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). The study reported no adverse reactions to Glucomannan.

  • Allergy Relief: In mice, glucomannan powder inhibited the development of atopic dermatitis and overproduction of substance P and proinflammatory cytokines. It also inhibited overproduction of IgE, the immunoglobulin that causes most of the body's allergic reactions.
